Octavia Blue by Chaos-Flare44 Octavia Blue by Chaos-Flare44
So I got a google nexus 7 tablet for Christmas and have been loving the crap out of it. Prior to this I've been using my tiny out-of-date 4th generation ipod for all my doodling. Needless to say that isn't exactly the best way to draw, what with the tiny screen and the frequent crashing. But now that I have a tablet (as well as a nifty touch screen pen I bought) I can get a bit more ambitious with my doodles... assuming the upcoming semester doesn't drive me into the ground...

This is a sketch that I made in the process of learning the new features of the app I used.

EDIT: Featured on EQD! I can die happy.

This is quite a nice sketch :D I've been trying to wrap my head around sketching on my own Nexus 7 with both Sketchbook Pro and Clover Paint (lots of features in Clover that are nice but it carries a heftier price tag and takes quite a bit to get used to--I hear. I still haven't gotten used to it XD). Feels so strange not having true pressure sensitivity and poking at the screen with even the Wacom Bamboo Solo finer tipped stylus is so much less accurate than I'm used to with my old Intuos2 but seeing that someone can put out work like this is certainly inspiring. What stylus are you using on yours?

Anyhoo, sorry for the somewhat off-topic ramble. Keep up the fine work :D

Thanks!

Yeah, the lack of pressure sensitivity is a pain. My problem though is between school, work, and video games, drawing has has been a pretty low priority, so I've been hesitant to dish out the money for a dedicated drawing tablet (not so much because I cant afford a cheap one, but that I don't often have the time for much more than random doodles). A nexus 7 was a good compromise for me because I can use it for drawing as well as reading, watching movies, etc. so I was much more willing to spend the money on it.

As for the stylus, I'm pretty sure its just some cheap-o $10 thing I bought at best buy. Its not labeled so I don't know what brand it is, but it's not much different from yours (its not as sleek, but it has a similar tip).

To be honest though, there probably isn't any tablet+app+stylus combo that can offer the same amount of depth and precision as a traditional tablet and gimp/photoshop. You can still make good stuff, but it takes a lot more work. Its fun though, and being forced to adapt to inferior tech kinda forces you to try things you might not have considered to make the picture look good.

Doodle? This is...this is....this is my daily high Octave dose of Octavia in a glorious ART FORM! Her unique expression could only be matched by that cute little tuff of hair you've drawn ever so elegantly in your art style! - Clearly I haven't had my Octavia in a while

To be honest, I've never heard of that movie before now. But its funny how easily it could apply to this pic.

The true story behind the title is remarkably mundane. While I was still working on the pic I simply titled it 'Octavia' with the intention of coming up with something more creative later. At that time I used the same colors as the show. While doing editing I started looking at different filters and found one that I liked simply called 'blue'. So me, in my infinite wisdom, named the pic 'Octavia Blue'.

For some inexplicable reason the name grew on me and I decided to stick with it, something about it feeling kind of ominous. Though of course I've spoiled that now that I've told the truth xp

Thanks! It took quite a bit of time for me to get to my current style, and there are still plenty of ways I want to improve.

Just look at my gallery (shameless plug). I frequently tried out different techniques (for better or worse), and I would take what I liked and throw out what I didn't. It takes time, but keep working at it and always be proud of how much you've progressed.

The bulk of the work was done with SketchBook Pro for Tablets. I can't remember the price, but its not too much, and there is a lite version available that you could try out.

The borders and after effects were done with the picture gallery app that came pre-installed on my device.

I just used the gallery app that came pre-installed on my tablet. But I just looked up pix and it looks much more robust, I'll be sure to give it a whirl. Thanks!
